3D Modeling

Here is a 3 part tutorial that will walk you through step-by-step instructions for creating a creature. Include a head and a body made from separate spheres, LOTS OF DETAIL, and texture and color (if possible... texture and color tend to crash the computer).

Design Dream Job

Sometimes as a graphic artist you may need to create images that are simply to pay your bills; still a really fun job! For this project imagine that you are a super hot shot graphic designer and you have just landed a contract to create a skateboard deck design for an awesome skate company, OR a concert gig poster for your favorite musical artist/band. Projects must be created in illustrator, though you can trace photos that YOU HAVE TAKEN - NOT FROM THE WEB. Do not copy an existing design for a deck or poster. You must combine multiple images to create your project: don't just trace one image. Remember compositional rules! Both projects may include use of the gradient tool. Here is a new tutorial on how to use the gradient tool:

Requirements for both:
Trace or draw with the pen tool at least 3 different images into your project that are fairly complicated.
Include a clear focal point - follow rules of composition.

Gig posters should be 11" x 17"
Gig posters should include informational text:

  • Name of Band
  • Date/Time of Event
  • Venue
  • Cost
Create original artwork with the pentool.

Here are some cool examples of skateboard deck designs and gig posters:

B4: Essential Satire Project

For this project you will be required to research a corporation or organization that may have caused some problems in society. Look at their corporate logo and think about ways that you could alter it to be a form of critique regarding the social issue they are connected with. Then create a Photoshopped alteration of the logo. Next you need to bring your Photoshopped image into Illustrator and trace it with the pen tool. Be sure to include bridges and islands so the stencil works when you cut it out. Finally you will cut it out and spray paint through the stencil.

Here is a link to the lesson PowerPoint with instructions: Click Here

Here is an example of the stencil created in illustrator:

B2: Pen Tool Practice

Find a cool image of a scene off of the internet of a reasonably complex thing: an animal, car, house, person's face, etc...  OR go around the school for 10 - 15 minutes and snap a cool picture of something. You will need to make a photo pass: see the "Photo Pass Instructions" tab at the top of the blog for instructions. You can use your phone to take a picture or get a camera from Mr. Brandt if cameras are available.

Then use the strategies learned from the violin lesson to complete the drawing over the top of your new image. This project should include much more detail and layers of color/value than the violin.

Here are several examples of student work:

Trace the violin image for practice. Follow the tutorial to learn how to use the pen tool:
